  • Cardinal RICHELIEU - Offices building

Ambitious renovation of an office complex in the heart of Exchange District to create a high-standing business center aiming HQE/BREEAM/LEED for sustainability. The facades, although inspired by the 1950s standards, have a simple, modern look. The main components are: glass, aluminum and concrete cladding. The geometry is extremely rigorous and the details aim for perfection.

The regional learning center of Gennevilliers appears as a set of two parallel and monolithic naves. These are cladded by a siding shingle of terra-cotta which covers the façades and the roofs, giving it continuity and unity to the different volumes created. Designed as an open end of the building, the Northern facade includes a high and smooth glass wall which becomes their showcase.

The project is structured around three buildings whose facades are broken down in order to ensure an overall consistency of buildings.
Aiming for BBC (low consumption) and the Climate Plan of Paris requirements, we developed natural ventilation valves to ensure passive cooling during the night. This has allowed us to avoid any mechanical cooling.
Louvers have also been developed specifically for both the comfort of users and animation of the street façades.

The concept is to keep a consistent design, a «family look» at urban scale, among the towers while proposing variations based on their functions / orientations. Each façade is equipped with an appropriate shading device combined with a selective glazing. This single skin system is made of repetitive and standard components. It offers comfortable environment to users, using simple, yet innovative and eco-intelligent technology while avoiding the extra-cost and usual risks of a double-skin façade in a subtropical climate.

The tower is composed of a reflective double-skin facade and a simple black skin with complex geometry (inclined and curved) implemented by panels. A covered bridge connects the tower to an annex building. This secondary volume follows the same facade logic but as a single skin facade. The roof, considered as a fifth façade is entirely covered by glazed glass panels.

Th is project dressing an existing sheet pile wall, in the hot river district, has geometry based on a parametric design. Implementation of the project in the construction phase raised questions of feasibility of the computer-generated profiles. Rationalization of each blade profile was necessary in order to render them feasible in view of the material constraints (aluminum). Construction was completed in October 2012 before the launch of the “Fantastic 2012” event.

This building was opened to the public in 2006. In 2009, we were selected to assist the client in studying the change in appearance of the exterior glazing. Since 2010, we carried out control visits twice annually. The exterior glazing is installed according to the structurally sealed glass specifications and submitted to a technical advice during works.

The main issue for this project was to have two-way doors which are really thermally efficient (Uw= 1,5 W/m²,K)  in order to get a renovation HEQ certification. We drew the joinery at the same time we conducted the thermal studies in 3D as well as the structural ones to get a steel joinery which was completely pierced and of which the holes become thermal contact breaker. As this project was quick we have completed everything within a year.

The project consists of three distinct, yet complementary programs built around a foyer; these three elements are clearly distinguished by their composition in the facades.
The building expresses its program through an opaque stone facade levitating over the glass facade of the ground floor.
The foyer of the Theatre is a largely glazed suspended façade while the exhibition building is enclosed by aluminum curtain walls.

Galleria is a famous shopping center chain in Korea which gathers all luxurious brands. In order to keep Galleria architectural identity, we and the architects designed two buildings: a modern one and a more classical one. The facades are made out of ceramic, a local and hand-crafted material. Small and subtle reflexion differences define each building.

To this rehabilitation on the Champs-Elysées, the facade has become a appeal from the street to the inside. As a result, it is porous and made with large glass perforated modules. The whole is framed by a "marquise" in recognition of the limits for the new volume of the cinema. This canopy becomes "skin" of glass inside.

Conception of the new Knokke Heist Hospital façade. The double skin façade will be composed by inclined glasses and horizontal colored glasses point fixed. The inclined glasses are held in 6 points by melt aluminium pieces. These pieces are especially designed  for this project and will be custom made.
The optimization of the curved parts of the building allowed us to consider it in order to keep the original geometry.
The inclined glasses will be screen printed with white lines of different thickness to create a gradation and a cloudy effect.
A scale one (4m x 4m) mock-up has been realized by VS-A to validate both architectural and technical aspects.

The project consists in the design of a wrinkled glass façade of 7 meters high without any visible structure. The glass panels received a typical Longchamp pattern matching the color of the cladding.

Maintenance and durability have been particularly improved due to the typical climate of Hong-Kong by high requirements in the material selection, technical detailing and construction.

  • MUCEM Marseille

Our involvement in the project was in collaboration with the architect RICCIOTTI as was also the case with the COCTEAU museum and the Jean BOUIN stadium. The architectural concepts of MUCEM included several ideas for the outer structure which required some research and some innovative responses.  Firstly, in the exhibition area, it was necessary to devise an outer structural system which could give stability to the BFUP (ultra-high-performance concrete) screen. The architectural concepts of MUCEM included several ideas for the outer structure which required some research and some innovative responses.  Research into the structural design of the building, with spans up to 8.5 meters on the 3rd floor, endeavored to obtain maximum neutrality in order to enhance the concrete structure and render it much more expressive. A very compact solution was developed, in keeping with the requirements which were nevertheless stringent on this coastal site (wind, corrosion) also in a seismic zone. The architectural concepts of MUCEM included several ideas for the outer structure which required some research and some innovative responses. The definition of energy performances being another issue, as the screen acted as a sun protector, its design therefore had a direct impact on its performance. Our work for the architect consisted in optimizing the glazing characteristics (solar factor, light transmission), as a function of the rate of perforation of the BFUP screen. This involved some toing and froing between design and calculations, both somewhat complex. The architectural concepts of MUCEM included several ideas for the outer structure which required some research and some innovative responses.

Designed as a volumetric ribbon this building is enveloped with a two-layer façade. The first layer, recently completed, includes big double-glazed surfaces and performs the wind&water-tightness. The exterior layer is made of progressively “stretched” Expanded Panels (aluminum). The idea was to optimize daylight and gain solar protection using the variation of the openings in the expanded panels.

Conforms to: High Environmental Quality Label (HQE).

The complex geometry of the project consists of 2 distinct volumes, the entrance part (the Crystal) and the exhibition part (the Cloud).
The glazing of the Crystal consists of a three-dimensional steel main structure and a secondary structure supporting the glazing (2 sides
    rebate
    tightening).
The Cloud, being more opaque, is coated with a stainless steel cladding placed in a sealing compound on an insulating steel tray, supported by a network of secondary steel framing.
This building required the study of a large number of complex geometric glazing.

The idea of a monolithic facade is introduced by a brick wall with regular square frame windows. The fine aluminum frames are designed and extruded “sur mesure”. Responding to the idea of a sliced bloc the patios are flush and largely glazed (unitized curtain wall system). Both, frame window’s and curtain wall’s architecture are expressed with color. HQE objectives and BBC label are achieved.

  • PROUVE center - GRAND NANCY

The Nancy Conference Centre involves the refurbishment of the existing building, the former Postal Sorting Office, and the building of a new extension running alongside the railway tracks. This is the first partnership with architects Marc BARANI and Christophe PRESLE, and different solutions have been proposed depending on location: the Sorting Office, the extension; and the ‘internal street’ linking the two buildings. The Sorting Office designed by Claude PROUVE and Jacques ANDRE is regarded as a major work of 1970’s architecture consequently, the architects and Grand Nancy council were anxious to preserve it and retain its appearance. The idea behind the refurbishment of the Sorting Office envelope was to try to create a ‘visually identical’ replica of the original façade, while at the same time achieving thermal and acoustic performances to fulfil current comfort needs. The new building has been designed as a translucent block with hollowed-out transparent sections linking it with the town. This pursuit of transparency required research and technical solutions of a particularly specific nature. In tackling the architectural challenges posed by this project, the architects were able to draw on the full expertise of VS-A, which came up with a wide range of solutions from which, they chose the most ambitious.

The envelope of the Renaissance Hotel is composed of a curved showcase, a glass braid for the hotel and a large screen for the restaurant. The design and realization of each façade are a series of technical prowess. The showcase is a smooth facade, using a glue technique with very large glass curved. The braid of the hotel consists of curved glass modules concave and convex requested specific studies in the design of the glass components, the thickness of the floor and the curve joinery. The screen of the restaurant is made with an insulating glazing fixed at the top and the botton at a height of 4.20 meters, a record!

Cladding and sun shading composed of rectangular stainless steel sheets which have been cut out following a graphic inspired by letters and mathematical symbols designed by the artist Suzanne KÖHL. The cuttings are bent in different directions so as to provoke a light and shadow game and give a three dimensional perception of the metal surface. The whole system is fixed on the existing concrete structure.

Facing the ambitious environnemental targets of the programme "SKY 56", the technical and architectural choices of our project offer a huge environnement concept, fit in the building. Due to the architectural choice of double floors, combined to a performant double skin facade, the energetic consumption of the builiding are estimated to : winter 14 kWh/m².year ; summer 6 kWh /m².year ; autumn and spring 3 kWh/m².year. Main design solutions : heat and cool surface < 53% of the total surface ; high level of naturel light ; use of the free volume and air stratification as a hot air storage between two phases of free cooling ; use of the thermal inertia of the frame.

  • SSI towers

The two towers share a common basis. They’re twins but yet, they’re also individual objects. Their façades must express this identity while remaining adapted and reactive to their environment. A general strategy of conception based on geometry and materiality has been set-up; taking into account envelope heat gain reduction, glare control, daylighting, view, pollution, climate, materiality and individual identity. This strategy, while being consistent with the tradition of tropical facade is strongly merged with contemporary architectural parameters. 1st prize project.

  • Taikang Headquarters

BIG is known to always defy the frontiers of architecture and for the Taikang Headquarters, we indeed pushed the envelope. A series of volumes were studied in parallel to suit the architectural intent and the client's appeal. Finally, a daring design of interlocking domes was selected. VS-A was responsible to ensure a proper structural facade expression while achieving a proper solar protection, specially in large atrium spaces.

Construction of a hotel, a shopping center, an office building and two residential towers in Colombo. The complexity resulted from the use of a prefabricated industrial façade system (this façade represented 20,000m²) while preserving its geometrical features. We then proposed to design all the project façades (400,000m²) in keeping with this concept. The result was a cohesive framework façade concept, varying according to the geometrical architectural and energy concepts.

Lot 05 of approximately 0.4 hectares is conceived to receive the program of offices and commercial equipment, the buiding is located in the western finge of the ZAC Clichy Batignolles in Paris. Between "iron and park", the west facade is along the railway lines, as the first barrier to sonore nuisance generated by trains. The north, south and East facades, borded by new bridge, footbridge and wide lumpy path, represent a smooth transition to projected housing program of the same ZAC. All facades are studied with their environmental contexts for achieving the HQE and BREEAM and/or LEED objectifs.
